Tinnitus

Tinnitus is the perception of sound with no external sound source. It has many causes and is often accompanied by hearing impairment. It can be perceived as a ringing, roaring, buzzing or hissing sound to name a few.

Tinnitus is not a disease but rather a symptom often related to the auditory system. An audiological consultation is always recommended to rule out any significant medical condition. Up to 10-15% people report having had tinnitus at some point in their life. Counselling with an audiologist experienced in managing tinnitus can improve your chances of success in regaining your quality of life. The effects of tinnitus can often be minimised by a combination of counselling and sound stimulation, such as masking noise or hearing aids.

Vincent Van Gogh is said to have cut off his ear during an excruciating bout of tinnitus.
